The revamped Tree Top is third restaurant in what is easily the Chicagoland’s most compelling music venue. Levy Restaurants has partnered with the Ravina Fesitival for menus that range from lawn and tent catering to all-inclusive private party packages. In most cases Lawn Bar, Tree Top and Park View dining areas will be open before and during performances with last call at intermission.
Ravinia is the country’s oldest music festival, these new restaurants compliment their traditional lawn policy that encourages patrons to bring their own food and drink. The new dining experience also includes Ravinia Market. Fresh nightly grab and go options from both hot and cold food stations are available in the expanded space that was rejuvenated by the crew behind the Adler Planetarium’s Sky Theater.
With over 140 events this season you can experience everyone from Mary J. Blige to Roger Daltrey. Ravinia is also the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, kids are free are admitted free to all classical events. I’m the dad of an 8yr old violinist and learned about Ravinia’s Reach*Teach*Play program at the reveal.
Ravinia reaches 80 schools annually through a series that promotes hearing, making and exploring music. Kindergarten through 8th graders can participate in a 15-week residency.
What makes this venue special is the unique way that the crowd interacts on the lawn. Some of the staff’s favorite shows from last season included the bluegrass stylings of Yo-Yo Ma. On cooler evenings the sound pierces through the terrace and patio air in a distinguished way.
For Maroon 5’s show the pop act sounded more like a jam band extending three minute tunes into ten-minute performances. Those lucky enough to catch the band’s rehearsals knew they were in for a treat when they practiced longer than any group in recent memory. Brazilian orchestra composers often incorporate theater into their shows. There’s an extraordinary communal effect when experiencing classical music intertwined with nature.
